taos dawn

Taos artist Dawn Chandler first fell in love with New Mexico in the early 1980’s when she visited the Land of Enchantment as an Explorer Scout at Philmont. Continuing in the legacy of her older brothers Eric and Mark, she participated in Philmont’s Rayado program before becoming a Ranger and Training Ranger. In 1988 she had the honor of being chosen to serve as Philmont’s first woman Camp Director (Abreu), a position she held for two seasons. Dawn later served Philmont in yet another pioneering capacity when from 1996 to 2003 she was the first Executive Director of the Philmont Staff Association (PSA).

Born and raised in Bridgewater, New Jersey, Dawn attended Miami University of Ohio, earning a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree in painting in 1988. In 1992 she was awarded a full fellowship to attend the prestigious Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture in Maine. She graduated from Penn in 1993 with a Master of Fine Arts Degree in painting.

Dawn works as a fulltime artist in Taos, New Mexico, where she has resided since 1994. Though she works in a variety of mediums and styles, the land of northern New Mexico—and especially of Philmont—continues to be the subject matter of the majority of her representational paintings. Indeed, she is pleased to count among her patrons a great many Philmont alumni, many who have commissioned her to create specific beloved scenes of “God’s Country.”

Dawn’s artwork—including numerous landscapes of Philmont—may be seen and purchased via her on-line gallery www.taosdawn.com. Her work may also be viewed in person at the St. James Hotel in Cimarron, Eske’s Brewpub in Taos, and at Taos Dawn Designs, her home gallery in Taos Canyon.
